Introducing Paul Beckel:
Tolt Middle School's New Assistant Principal and Athletic Director
Paul Beckel, with family.
“There is no greater success in the classroom than the moment you see your students grasp part of the content they had previously struggled with. This goes for life outside of the classroom as well.”
Pursuing individual and collective success for students both inside and outside the classroom is a trait that has defined the education career of Paul Beckel, who joins Tolt Middle School as its new Assistant Principal and Athletic Director. As a coach, educator, administrator, and former Dean of Students with Hudson’s Bay High School in Vancouver, Washington, Mr. Beckel has had a significant impact on the students and families he works with each day.
Born and raised in Vancouver, Mr. Beckel indicates he is excited for the opportunity to learn and grow in a new community. “This is a challenging time in education,” he shares. “I am so fortunate to be a part of a district who places value on the individual. We are all in this together!”
After graduating from Central Washington University with a degree in physical education and school health, Beckel returned to his hometown and was hired at Hudson’s Bay. In addition to teaching P.E. and Health, he coached Boys Basketball and Boys Golf, and also taught Algebra and technology courses. Earning a Master’s Degree in 2018, Mr. Beckel became the Dean of Students for the school that same year.
His time at Hudson’s Bay was influential: He implemented a New Teacher Mentoring program, was a leader in developing student intervention programs, broadening behavioral support and restorative justice with the student population, and created programs that targeted at-risk students and cultivated social-emotional learning.
“When I was in high school, I noticed that my favorite teacher was able to build relationships with students of diverse interests, values, and backgrounds. The emphasis he placed on building relationships meant he had a high level of success in his classes. The power of building relationships grew into the backbone of my educational philosophy.”
With the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to alter and affect families across the state and nation, Riverview has opened in a Remote Learning environment for the 2020-2021 school year. As a new administrator, Mr. Beckel may already miss the personal interaction he is used to on a day-by-day basis, but he sees silver linings forming in a virtual learning world.
“As we enter the school year, with many unknown and unanswered questions, we have an opportunity to all learn together. If we remain student-centered, I have no doubt we will come out of this pandemic with a greater sense of community.”
Please join us in welcoming Paul Beckel to Tolt Middle School and the Riverview School District.
