On Friday, March 22, 2019, Cedarcrest High School’s Nursery Landscape Career Development Event (CDE) team traveled to the small farming town of Lind, located in Eastern Washington for the 2019 FFA Nursery Competition.

Lind-Ritzville High School hosted the event, which saw many teams from around the State of Washington compete, including Cedarcrest's five-person team.

Team members Brooke Downing, Keaton Downing, Parker Downing, Leila Misallati, and Sawyer Vondra competed in plant identification, landscape estimating, and a knowledge test. Additionally, students completed an individual practicum testing their landscape knowledge, as well as their ability to perform industry tasks such as verbal customer assistance, written customer assistance, and potting or propagation. Lastly, teams compete in a team activity where they are given a scenario to design a landscape and present it to a panel of judges.

Cedarcrest had all five members of the team score in the individual Top 10 rankings. Keaton Downing finished in 10th place, while Parker Downing ranked 8th. Brooke Downing finished in 6th place, while Sawyer Vondra placed 4th, and Leila Misallati came in 2nd place.

With their accumulated scores, Cedarcrest High School earned an overall First Place team award, qualifying them to represent Washington state at the FFA National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana this coming October. They will compete against other winning teams from across the nation. Earlier this season, the team also took first place at a competition at Sedro-Woolley High School!
