Riverview Welcomes New Safety Officers

Joe Ayers (L) and Brad Knowles (R) are Riverview's new SSOs (School Safety Officers)

The Riverview School District recently completed a year-long process that has led to the hiring of two new School Safety Officers. We are proud to announce that Joe Ayers and Brad Knowles have been selected for these new roles in Riverview. The Safety Officers will be providing services to Tolt Middle School, the Riverview Learning Center, Carnation Elementary and Stillwater Elementary. The added positions will bolster safety and security district-wide and provide comprehensive, coordinated services and support.

Safety Officers will work with school administrators and local law enforcement to implement prevention programs; establish positive relationships with students, staff, and the community; communicate with parents; enforce school rules; and assist administrators with safety and security related issues.

Riverview Superintendent, Dr. Anthony L. Smith, says that the time is right to expand the district-wide Safety & Security program.

“We have a great School Resource Officer program in Duvall that covers the north end of the district with one full-time and one half-time officer. With our new Safety Officers, we will equalize safety and security staffing throughout the district, ensuring we have a total of three full-time people focused on safety and security for our students and staff. They will provide eyes and ears on the ground and be a consistent presence to enhance the student experience.”

Beginning May 15, 2019, Mr. Ayers and Mr. Knowles will be engaged in a comprehensive training program, both on and off-site. The program is aimed at equipping them with the skills necessary for a seamless transition into their positions by the start of the 2019-2020 school year.

If anyone has additional questions about the new School Safety Officers, they can be answered by contacting the Superintendent’s Office.
