Riverview School District Designated as a 'Safe Place'
The Riverview School District is proud to be a designated Safe Place.
Safe Place, in partnership with Friends of Youth, is an outreach program designed to provide immediate access to help and safety for youth in ages 11-17 in crisis. The King County Safe Place program began in 2011 and is a collaborative effort between Nexus in South King County, YouthCare in Seattle, and Friends of Youth in North and East King County. Together, the organizations come together to support teens in crisis situations, creating a safety net for youth.
You will see signs, such as the one above, in and around the Riverview School District, prominently displayed at the Riverview Educational Service Center in Duvall. If you are under 18 and in need of a Safe Place, the organization enables teens to “Text 4 Help” by simply texting the word “SAFE” and their existing location to 69866. The opportunity to locate and identify the nearest Safe Place locations are available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, by calling (800) 422-TEEN (8336).
In addition to the Riverview School District building in our community, Safe Place sites include all King County Metro buses, the King County Library System, YMCAs of Greater Seattle, and Evergreen Health Emergency Departments.
Safe Place also works closely with Friends of Youth, supporting their Emergency Teen Shelter Program for girls and boys ages 7-17. That program, entitled Youth Haven, provides short-term emergency shelter for homeless youth and offers case management, education support, and family reconciliation services. Additionally, for homeless and at-risk youth, ages 15-24, Friends of Youth’s Street Outreach Program is another resource available for those in need.
For more information on what constitutes a designated Safe Place, and how the program works, brochures, information, and contact cards are available at all Safe Place locations. To learn more about Friends of Youth, please visit friendsofyouth.org or call them directly at (425) 869-6490.
