Tolt’s Nikolai Decneut Wins Middle School Geography Bee

“Amelia Earhart went missing in 1937 while attempting to fly around the world with her navigator, Fred Noonan. National Geographic is sponsoring an expedition to search for the crash site at Nikumaroro Island. Nikumaroro Island is a part of Kiribati, located in what ocean?”

Correctly answering that question made Nikolai Decneut, a seventh grader at Tolt Middle School, the winner in the annual school-wide Geography Bee. Decneut outlasted seven other students to earn an opportunity to advance to the state competition at Pacific Lutheran University in the spring.

Each year, Tolt's Social Studies teachers conduct classroom Geography Bee events to determine individual classroom winners. Those remaining students next advance to the school-wide competition overseen by Social Studies teacher Matt LaBrie. Questions are answered in either oral or written form and students can miss up to two questions before they are eliminated. Once the final two students remain, they compete in a best-of-3 format to determine the school winner.

Students are asked a wide variety of questions, both of a domestic and international nature, with 15 seconds to respond. And whether it is remembering the locations of famous landmarks, recognizing how cities connect on a map, or questions focused around famous moments of history, including the question above, students have a significant amount of information to study and prepare for.

The National Geographic Bee is an annual competition organized by the National Geographic Society, designed to inspire and reward students' curiosity about the world. Students in grades 4-8, from 10,000 schools across the United States, will compete in the 2018 National Geographic Bee for a chance to win college scholarships and the glory of being the National Geographic Bee Champion.

Nikolai will next take a written exam in the hopes that if he scores high enough, he will earn a spot in the statewide Bee.

We congratulate Nikolai, as well as all the students who competed in the Tolt Geography Bee this year!

Oh, wait...we almost forgot...
Nikolai correctly answered “The Pacific Ocean” to the Amelia Earhart question above!
