Dear Students, Staff, Parents, and Community Members:
Our continuing area of focus in Riverview is “personalizing student learning with an equity lens.” As part of personalizing student learning, we are continuing to take a deep look at equity and access as we prepare students for life-long academic, social, and emotional learning. Our award-winning schools and programs continue to receive recognition on a local, regional, state and national level. Three areas we will be focusing on moving forward include:
- Early childhood support systems. This will enable children from the earliest age to have learning opportunities to prepare for kindergarten readiness. Possible opportunities could include parent education, support to area preschools, and partnerships with local and regional agencies.
- Embedded professional learning for our staff. Our district has prioritized job-embedded learning opportunities. Our teachers are collaborating with coaches and trainers to explore instructional practices that engage and move students. Teachers experience first-hand the power of these techniques and are able to receive “in the moment” feedback. Additionally, teams reflect on their own practice and benefit from time to craft lessons and plan together.
- Ensuring all students have the skills to succeed, regardless of their pathway after high school. Whether students are entering universities, colleges, technical schools, apprenticeships, the world of work, the military, or a job training program, we want them to master the skills to make them viable candidates to achieve their dreams. This will include adding more certification and pre-certification programs that articulate throughout our Pre-K to Post-12 system.
Lastly, as you may be aware, there is an election upcoming on Tuesday, February 13, 2018. The Riverview School District has put three levies on the ballot - a Four-Year Replacement Educational Programs and Operations Levy, a Four-Year Replacement Technology & Capital Projects Levy, and a Two-Year Transportation Vehicle Fund Levy. We encourage everyone to exercise their right to vote on or before February 13, to make sure your vote is counted.
Thanks for your part in supporting our most precious asset - our students and their futures.
Dr. Anthony L. Smith
